This is a great approach if you want to design your own portfolio UI. I agree emphatically that WordPress is overkill. If you want a more streamlined approach to technical portfolio development you might want to consider Techfolios (http://techfolios.github.io/), which combines GitHub Pages, Semantic UI, Jekyll, and JSON Resume.
